THE ENCOUNTER
MALC OL M X AND MARTIN LUTHER KING JR
A global and urgent theme, the fight against oppression, discrimination and exclusion of black people in society is the starting point of the play "The Gathering - Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.
Directed by Isaac Bernat, the staging narrates, in a fictional meeting of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. in a Harlem hotel, the different ideas, performances and strategies of the two greatest black leaders of all time.
The first Brazilian production, premiered in 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, the text by North American Jeff Stetson with translation and adaptation by Rogério Corrêa is not only restricted to the political and historical side present in the trajectories of the two North American references. The human in both invades the scene and makes us understand that, behind any ideology or strategy of action, there is someone with doubts, contradictions, idealism, and passion for the cause to which he dedicates himself.
Although they lived at the same time, historically the activists made different trajectories and only met for a few minutes, in a quick handshake. In addition, both were assassinated in the 1960s and at the same age: 39. Each one, in their own way and with their own beliefs, gave their lives for an ideal that continues to be sought in many countries, including Brazil, and left eternal marks in the fight for human rights.
